Photos from Zoe Weil Event

Last night Zoe Weil (pronounced “Zoh While”) gave a fascinating and motivating presentation at our shelter entitled “The World Becomes What We Teach: Educating a Generation of Solutionaries.” Over 100 people flocked to here Zoe speak, and the evening was filled with open-minded discussion, lots of helpful Q&A, a book signing, and delicious food.

Not only did she discuss the benefit of humane education in schools, but she engaged the audience in a really enlightening party game: True Price. This is a really interesting game to play with your friends and family; we highly recommend it. This game could take between 30-60 minutes. In our session, Zoe held up a (fake) fast-food cheeseburger and asked the audience the following questions. Please feel free to add your own responses in the comments section below.

  • What benefits/positive effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on YOU?
    • Some answers included: It’s tasty, inexpensive, convenient, fills your belly, etc.
  • What negative effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on YOU?
    • Some answers included: Weight gain, future health problems if eaten regularly, etc.
  • What benefits/positive effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on OTHER PEOPLE?
    • Some answers included: Providing jobs/wages to individuals looking for work, provides inexpensive and calorie-rich foods for the homeless/poor, jobs in the meat/dairy industries, etc.
  • What negative effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on OTHER PEOPLE?
    • Some answers included: The wages in the fast food industry are low, jobs in the meat/dairy industry are not always safe, etc.
  • What benefits/positive effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on THE ENVIRONMENT?
    • Although we tried to be impartial, we could not think of any answers for this question.
  • What negative effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on THE ENVIRONMENT?
    • Some answers included: Deforestation, methane/greenhouse gases, nitrogen in the water, etc.
  • What benefits/positive effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on ANIMALS?
    • To the surprise of all of us, the primary BENEFIT to the animal population in general is that the sale of cheeseburgers benefits chickens greatly.
  • What negative effects does this cheeseburger (eating it, the production of it, the sale of it, etc.) have on ANIMALS?
    • Most of these answers resolved around the inhumane treatment of cows in the meat and dairy industries.

Thank you, Zoe, for sharing your time, wisdom, and talents here at the shelter. We hope to have you back soon!
