What do kids do at camp?

Campers do a variety of age-appropriate, animal-themed activities, including games, crafts and learning activities. And, kids get lots of hands-on time with the animals at the shelter. In all of our activities, there is a focus on kindness to animals, pet owner responsibility, and safety around pets.

Where is camp held?

All camp activities are held at our shelter, which is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale. Most activities are held in the newly-renovated multipurpose room on the second floor of the shelter. (The second floor is off-limits to the visiting public.) Supervised campers also spend time in the animal-housing areas of the shelter.

Do you offer beforecare or aftercare?

No. Camp is from 9am-3pm and children must be picked-up and dropped-off promptly.

How do I sign my child up?

You can register on our website: www.humanebroward.com. You will receive an email confirmation once registration is complete. The registration fee is due at the time you register your child.

What should my child wear?

Campers are encouraged to wear comfortable “play clothes”. Jeans or long pants are ideal to protect their legs. Sneakers or other closed-toed shoes are required (NO flop flops or sandals). Please put sunscreen on your child each morning.

What is your cancellation policy?

A full refund will be issued as long as you cancel in writing (cneff@hsbroward.com) at least two weeks before the start date of your child’s camp week.

Tell me about the camp counselors.

Camp is run by the HSBC’s Education Department, which consists of four employees: Caroline Crane, Carrie Neff, Darlene Feldman, and Katie Tutt. We also have a number of adult volunteers that help us in shifts during camp. All HSBC staff members and adult volunteers are required to submit to and pass a criminal background check. We also enlist the help of our Teen Club volunteers, of which we usually have 4-6 per day. All helpers involved in camp more than 2 days must be fingerprinted and screened through the Florida Department of Children and Families.

How much does it cost?

Kid’s camp costs $225. This includes a daily snack with drink, a Friday pizza party, a camp t-shirt, and all of the supplies for the planned activities. There is a sibling discount of $25 off per child when the siblings are registered at the same time.

Do I need to send lunch and snacks?

You will need to send lunch each day except for Friday, when we will have pizza. We provide a morning snack with a beverage each day. Campers are welcome to bring additional snacks if they’d like.

Why do I have to go inside to drop-off and pick-up my child?

We require that parents and approved guardians sign children in and out because we want to ensure that at no point are campers left alone.
