Our goal is to educate and model to our youth kindness, compassion and awareness of our responsibility towards our animal friends.

 

 

Elementary School Lessons suitable for students 5 to 10 years old.

ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS TOO!
This lesson teaches children about how animals communicate their feelings through sounds and body language. Children will learn that animals are very similar to us even though they don't speak our native language.

MEET AND GREET OUR ANIMAL FRIENDS
Our favorite program! What could be more valuable to your students then to visit the Humane Society of Broward County? Not only will your students learn all about the shelter and what we do to help homeless animals but they will also get to visit all the homeless animals available for adoption.

PET SAFETY PATROL
Children are the number one victims of animal bites! Often times children do not know the proper way to greet an animal, when to leave an animal alone and what to do if a stray animal approaches. This lesson will teach children all the basics to keep them safe and keep our animals happy. *A Animal Assisted therapy dog or puppet may accompany this presentation.

Middle to High School Lessons suitable for students 10 to 18 years old.

PET OVERPOPULATION
This hands-on activity teaches students about the tragedy of pet overpopulation. There are more than 1,000 dogs and cats per week in Broward County that are homeless. This lesson teaches students the importance of spaying and neutering, adopting from the shelter and making a lifetime commitment to their pet at home.

CLINIC TOUR
This tour is a real treat for those interested in seeing spay/ neuter surgery live and up close! The tour also includes a presentation about the Humane Society of Broward County and the importance of spaying and neutering. Students will also visit the homeless animals available for adoption.

PET STORES AND PUPPY MILL FACTORIES - THE CONNECTION
This video and PowerPoint lesson explore the sad reality of where pet store puppies come from - "PUPPY FACTORIES." Students will learn proactive ways they can help put an end to this cruel practice.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUR PET
This PowerPoint lesson explores all of the ways to protect and prepare your pet before a hurricane hits..

SCHEDULING INFORMATION

Length of tours/presentations - approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours

Times for tours - Monday - Friday between 10:30-5:30 pm

Times for presentations - Monday - Friday beginning at 8:30 am

Group Size - Maximum of 30 children

Age Requirements - 5 years and older

BREAK THE CHAIN!
This PowerPoint program helps children recognize the difference between a well cared for animal and an animal that is neglected. Children will learn about a pet's basic needs including companionship. Each child will receive a poster, bookmark and sticker to drive the lesson home.

THE PET SUITCASE
This hands-on lesson teaches children the huge responsibility of caring for a pet. Children will learn how to be a good "pet parent." They will unpack a real pet's suitcase and identify the importance of each item to the pet's well-being. *A Animal Assisted therapy dog or puppet may accompany this presentation

CAREER DAY
Career Day planners will welcome this presentation that introduces students to jobs and careers at the Humane Society of Broward County. Children will act out and dress up in costumes to demonstrate jobs at the shelter caring for animals.

SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME
This hands-on lesson teaches children the importance of pet identification and what to do in the event a pet gets lost. Students participate by constructing their own flier advertising a LOST dog or cat.
