In Memory of Marti Huizenga
The Humane Society of Broward County greatly mourns the passing on Tuesday of our dear friend Marti Huizenga, who was involved with the organization for almost 40 years.
Mrs. Huizenga was a generous philanthropist to many in our community, and especially to the homeless animals at Humane Society of Broward County. She was equally as giving of her time and leadership. Her legacy of caring about the animals will live on forever.
Mrs. Huizenga first became involved with the Humane Society of Broward County in the 1970s when she would bring her young children to the shelter to visit with the animals. Eventually she became an active volunteer whereby she helped clean the kennels and went on to serve as President of the Board of Directors.
Throughout the years, she helped the shelter expand its reach: she was instrumental in creating the shelter’s education department which now reaches 150,000 children and adults in our community; she was a strong proponent for early spay/neuter programs to combat pet overpopulation; and was a co-founder of the shelter’s fundraising auxiliary, PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) and the annual PAWS on the Green Women’s Invitational Golf Tournament.
Mrs. Huizenga also played an important role in securing collaborations between the Humane Society of Broward County and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, Junior Achievement of South Florida, and Women in Distress.
Marti was fond of saying that two of her passions were “kids and critters.” All who have been involved with the Humane Society of Broward throughout the years – especially the animals – will be forever grateful to her for her passion and support of our mission and the importance of teaching respect and kindness to all living creatures.
Mrs. Huizenga will be missed by all of her two-legged and four-legged friends.
The family plans a private funeral service and asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult time of mourning.
