Puerto Rico Pets

Have you heard about yesterday’s successful transport of over 200 dogs from Puerto Rico? (Click to see coverage from the Sun Sentinel.) This transport, titled Operation Grey Muzzle, was just the most recent transport of our nearly 20-year-long relationship with various shelters across the island.

For years now, Puerto Rico’s shelters have been overwhelmed with an abundance of stray and abandoned dogs. Our efforts yesterday were part of a multi-faceted initiative led by the Humane Society of the United States to help relocate these displaced dogs, create free space in Puerto Rican shelters, and help create programs (such as public spay/neuter) to help decrease the island’s animal overpopulation problem.

Out of the over 200 dogs who left the island, 24 of them will be placed up for adoption here at the HSBC over the next few days. The rest of the animals will be relocated to shelters in Florida and along the east coast.

While these 24 cuties are not available for adoption quite yet, we have quite a few Puerto Rican “Satos” (slang for “street dog”) from previous transports still in need of loving homes… including some lovable kittens from Puerto Rico as well!

Happy and his brother Bashful are two sweet kittens that flew all the way here from Puerto Rico. They adore each other and will be each other’s BFF… along with you, of course!

Coquito (ID 573715)

Humane Society of Broward County Weekly Pet Flyer
2 years old, male
Coquito is a super-sweet boy that loves affection. He would be a great family dog for anyone. He is moderately energetic and could use a little bit of basic training, but he loves peanut butter-flavored treats and takes them gently (which should make training a breeze).

Caramelo (ID 581483)

Humane Society of Broward County Weekly Pet Flyer
1 year old, male
Caramelo just came to our shelter a few days ago, so we are still getting to know him. However, we can already tell he is a sweetie!

Bernie (ID 581476)

Humane Society of Broward County Weekly Pet Flyer
2 years old, male
Bernie is also a brand-new addition to the shelter. While he is lovable and adorable, he is selective with his dog friends. If you are looking for a wonderful dog to spoil rotten, look no further than this cutie pie.
