Happy Read Across America Day

NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. We here at the HSBC whole-heartedly agree, which is why we have two fantastic reading programs set up to help struggling readers build confidence and ability.

Wags and Tales

The Wags & Tales Reading Program is an exclusive partnership with the Broward County Libraries and the School Board of Broward County. This program was developed by our Education Department, in an effort to provide a non-judgmental audience (Animal Assisted Therapy dog) for students experiencing difficulty with reading in a quiet and private location (library or school). Participants learn how to be safe around animals as well as what a loving friend, a dog, can be as they improve their reading skills.

Purrs and Tales

The success of the Humane Society of Broward County Wags & Tales program has led to the creation of a new program at the shelter called Purrs & Tales. In the Purrs & Tales program children will have a chance to come to the shelter and read to our adoptable cats. This program is designed to create a stress free and non-judgmental environment for children to practice their reading. Not only are the children able to develop their reading skills and boost self-esteem, but also provide valuable socialization and love to the shelter cats. There have been several similar programs created in other shelters and studies have reported improvement in the reading skills of the participating children.
