Meet the Humane Educators of the Humane Society of Broward County

Caroline Crane

V.P. of Education

Hi, my name is Caroline Crane. I was born and raised in Michigan and moved to South Florida over 40 years ago. I began working at the Humane Society of Broward County in 1994 as a veterinary technician.

Education has always been a cornerstone in my life. My bachelor’s degree is in Elementary Education and I have a master’s degree in Humane Education.

I have been the Vice President of the Education Department for over 30 years and have worked first hand on many of the programs and initiatives that are in place today. One of my favorite aspects of my job is being able to watch the shift in a child’s view of the world as they take in the lessons we teach and develop into empathic and devoted animal advocates.

Darlene Feldman

Humane Education Coordinator

Hi! My name is Darlene Feldman. I am a native New Yorker who has resided in S. Florida since 1983. My two sons were raised here and I’m fortunate enough that one of them and his family live close by.

I have been an educator for most of my adult life. I have a BA in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in reading.

I taught kindergarten, 1^st grade, math enrichment and was a reading specialist at a school for children with learning disabilities, with a total of 17 years of teaching experience.

I first came to the shelter as a volunteer 18 years ago. I came in weekly to provide the shelter dogs with pets, affection and love. I have always been a dog lover and have adopted from the shelter twice. I also volunteered at Kid’s Clubs, camps, and did presentations both at the shelter and at schools. I transitioned to becoming an employee 13 years ago and I have worked in the Education Department since. Some of my responsibilities are scheduling events for our department, overseeing the Teen Club and Friends of Animals Club, doing tours and presentations and assisting in both our camp programs and kid’s clubs. I enjoy bringing the mission of the Humane Society to help educate children and adults about the plight of homeless animals while using the teaching skills that I have developed throughout the years.

Katie Tutt

Animal Assisted Therapy & Wellness Manager

Hi, my name is Katie Tutt. I am a South Florida native with a lifelong passion for working with animals, helping people, and strengthening the connection between the two.

I joined the Humane Society of Broward County in August 2012 as an Adoptions Counselor and soon transitioned to the Education Department as the Special Programs Coordinator. Prior to joining HSBC, I worked in the fields of education and parks and recreation.

I bring more than 25 years of experience working with children and over 30 years of experience working with both small and large farm animals. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. My education and professional experience have provided me with a strong foundation for connecting with individuals of all ages and backgrounds while supporting the Humane Society of Broward County’s mission within our community.

I am especially passionate about promoting the powerful and therapeutic connection between people and animals through animal-assisted therapy and wellness programs. To further my knowledge and expertise in this field, I have also earned certification as an Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist.

Stephanie Campo

Hello all!

My name is Stephanie Campo and I am thrilled to be a member of the education department here at HSBC. I’ve lived all over the country, but moved to Broward County in 2020 and am loving my time in Florida thus far! I live in Weston with my husband and in my spare time I love to cook, travel, and collect vinyl records. I grew up with lots of pets in my life throughout the years, but at the moment I don’t have any fur babies of my own, which makes working with all of the animals here that much sweeter.

I have a B.A and M.A. in Music Education and spent 13 years in the classroom as a music teacher and band director. I love spending time with students and using creative pathways to uncover new concepts, allowing students to connect with the subject at hand. Working with youth groups is my passion and I certainly don’t shy away from a microphone or hosting events to make special memories for everyone involved.

I’ve enjoyed being part of our kids’ clubs, camps and the many other events here at HSBC. I hope to continue to support the great education programs we have here for kids of all ages and beyond. Here’s to sharing a great time with you at our facility or in the community soon, cheers!
