🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

Pet owners, please be aware of a troubling scam targeting those who have lost their pets. Scammers are posing as representatives of the Humane Society of Broward County and contacting people who have posted about their lost pets on platforms like Ring, Nextdoor, Facebook, Pawboost, and flyers. They falsely claim that the lost pet has been brought to the shelter injured and demand payment for surgery or veterinary care.

We want to emphasize that the Humane Society of Broward County will never ask for payment for surgery or to reclaim a pet via phone, text, email, or online. Tragically, one pet owner recently fell victim to this scam and transferred money before realizing her pet was not at our shelter. Others have reported being contacted by scammers with manipulated caller IDs showing our number.

If you’ve lost your pet and are contacted by someone asking for money, be cautious. Ask detailed questions, and do not send payments through Venmo, Zelle, or any other service. If you’ve offered a reward, only pay once your pet is safely returned.

We are heartbroken that these scammers are taking advantage of vulnerable pet owners, and we urge everyone to stay vigilant. If you suspect a scam, report it to local authorities immediately. Let’s work together to protect our community and reunite lost pets with their families. 🐾

The Humane Society of Broward County is a private non-profit organization made possible by generous donations from animal enthusiasts like you. The shelter is not affiliated with any other animal welfare organization with a similar name and receives no funding from them or the state.
