Think Ahead

If you are not planning to evacuate during a storm, make sure that your home is prepared to withstand a hurricane. Remember that if you are in an evacuation zone you will be required to evacuate no matter how many pets you have at home. If you must evacuate, talk to a friend or family member who lives in a highly secure area. Ask whether their home would be open to you and your companion animal should disaster threaten.

If you plan on going to a Red Cross Shelter, remember that they cannot accept animals. Make arrangements for your pets now, space is limited and advance planning is crucial! Create a list of boarding facilities including veterinary practices within a 100-mile radius of your home, and a list of nearby hotels that accept pets and under what circumstances.
